Lake Toba is an extraordinary natural wonder of the world. A visit to Lake Toba is not complete without a stay on Samosir Island. Situated in the huge crater lake of Toba in North Sumatra, Samosir is an island within a lake. Samosir Village is a tiny secluded village that retains authentic Batik culture. It also has one of the best views of Lake Toba. Even crazier still, there’s an Samosir island almost the size of Singapore within Lake Toba itself. Much its natural beauty remains intact, making it one of the most attractive places to visit in Indonesia.

Samosir Villa Resort
A chalet like resort located in one of the most strategic area right beside the Lake. The resort is Batak style with distinctive saddle-shaped roofs.
Don’t forget to grab a meal at one of their pavilions
Bukit Indah Simarjarunjung
With a couple of unique insta-worthy structures overlooking Lake Toba, Bukit Indah is one of the most instagrammable in the area.
Take really cool pic in a hot air balloon platform, or on a giant palm or heart suspended in the skies. My favourite was the tree house swing with the back drop of Lake Toba.
Ambarita Village
Batak Museum: An ancient king’s traditional house is retored and transformed it into the Batak Museum. The museum is small, but great if you are interested in understanding more about the Batak culture.
Batu Parsidangan: Stone chairs that were used for meetings by the local king and date back to 300 years ago! This is the stone for meetings and trials (even executions!!) and the chairs tower over you in size, giving you an idea of how a king’s council looked like during those times
Tomb of King Sidabutar
The site is small but interesting, however, you will walk past a whole stretch of souvenir stalls to visit the site. Remember to bargain!!! Find the ruins by taking a right from the main road in Tomok through the narrow alley lined with souvenir stalls. Most people find the carved man on the front of the largest sarcophagus strangely out of place.
Sibolaji White Sand Beach
A beach in a lake/among mountains??? Sounds pretty crazy right
But it exist!!!
Sigaruntung Panoramic View
This is a lesser know spot but the Lake Toba view here is probably one of the best you can find. Had a cup of coffee ($1 Sgd) and chilled here for an hour. This spot was really Instagrammable too!
Ferry Crossing
The highlight of Samosir is definitely the 1 hour ferry ride back to Medan
The scenery was really beautiful too. Especially since we caught the sunset!
From there we drove back to the Medan City, ending our exploration of Lake Toba
